GPS

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is one of the most exciting advancements in technology for many different reasons. GPS was developed by the United States Department of Defense for military applications, but has quickly grown in popularity and is now used for non-millitary purposes.

GPS is a satellite based navigation system that utilizes the satellites we have sent into space. The same satellites that provide us with television services, cellular service, and weather reports can keep track of where a vehicle is at any given point in time.

Many people use their GPS systems to ensure that when they are on a trip, they are driving in the right directions. This can be a great advantage when traveling especially if you are not familiar with the location.

A GPS system is also used in other ways to track vehicles. For example, a trucking company may install GPS systems on all of their trucks so they can keep track of where their trucks are at any time. This can help improve efficiency and pinpoint delivery times to within minutes.

A visual example of the GPS constellation in motion with the Earth rotating. Notice how the number of satellites in view from a given point on the Earth’s surface, in this example at 45°N, changes with time.

It can also help them devise better traveling routes that can save gas and improve on the traveling done by the truckers.

The release of GPS systems to the general public has brought about many different uses. Car dealers use GPS systems to deter theft during test drives. Even nervous parents of teenagers can use a GPS system to keep track of where their young driver is and even where they have been.

One of the great things about new consumer GPS systems is their ability to keep a log of where the vehicle has been previously as well as where it is presently. Some of these systems can also track how the person is driving that can be greatly beneficial to those nervous parents when they are discussing safe and responsible driving habits with their teens.

GPS systems are also being used in law enforcement to keep track of habitual offenders that have eluded police in the past. Private investigators are also using GPS systems to help track down cheating spouses and find other people they are investigating.

In short, a GPS system is a great tool that can help people in so many ways. Insurance companies are beginning to take notice too as they are providing discounts to policy holders who have vehicles equipped with GPS systems. It would be a good idea for you to check out a GPS system and get one of your own!
