Twenty four of these satellites are used to pinpoint the location of the GPS receiver. The other 3 are used as back ups in case one of the others malfunction or become unusable. Four of the satellites must focus in on the receiver and then a signal is sent back to the unit and then you can find out not only where you are but how you can get to where you want to be.
